14th of November – World Diabetes Day!

14th of November is World Diabetes Day which is internationally recognised. Over 3 million people in the UK live with Diabetes but do you know what the disease is and what can you do to prevent the onset of diabetes?

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a long-term condition in which the blood sugar level in the body is higher than normal.

There are two main types of diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetesor insulin-dependent diabetes. It is usually (although not exclusively) seen in young people.
  • Type 2 diabetesor non-insulin-dependent diabetes. It tends to affect adults over 40 and overweight people, although it is now becoming commoner amongst younger people. Type 2 diabetes occurs more frequently in people of South Asian and African-Caribbean descent. There are also other types of diabetes.

How common is diabetes?

Currently over 3 million people in the UK have with diabetes, the majority of which is type 2. It is estimated that more than half a million people more in the UK have type 2 diabetes, but are unaware of it.The last 30 years has seen a threefold increase in the number of cases of childhood diabetes. This is especially worrying in respect of the rising numbers of children and teenagers with Type 2 diabetes, which was once only seen in older people. This trend is likely to reflect the rising obesity levels in young people over the same time period. There has also been an increase in the number of children with Type 1 diabetes, the cause of which is unclear.

What are the common symptoms of diabetes?

  • increased thirst
  • frequent urination
  • tiredness
  • weight loss, although appetite often increases (especially in Type 1 diabetes)
  • itchiness, especially around the genitals or genital thrush
  • recurrent infections on the skin, e.g. boils or urinary infection.

How can you help prevent diabetes?

  • Live an active lifestyle
  • Eat healthily
  • Stop smoking

We’d just like to Thank each & every one of you who donated to our collection for the North Guildford Food Bank.

We collected quite an amount (check out the photo on our Facebook page!) & are ready to hand over all your generosity to the people of Guildford in need.

IMPORTANT Car Park Reminder

As you are all aware, the college have employed a really strict team to patrol the car parks.

Unfortunately, far too many of our members (& staff!) have received parking fines in the post last month due to not being signed-in clearly enough (among many other reasons).

Sadly, ActivZone do not have parking rights over the car park, & are only authorised to use the spaces opposite the gym under the following guidelines.

Therefore, we strongly urge you all to:

*Only park in marked bays opposite ActivZone’s door

*Only park in disabled bays if you’re a Blue Badge holder

*Sign-in in BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS on EVERY visit to AZ

*If the car park is FULL, please be patient until a space becomes available. (They usually free up quite quickly)


Parking outside of these guidelines will result in parking fines being issued which ActivZone cannot be held responsible for.


Personal Trainer of The Month

This month we’d like to introduce you to another of our external Personal Trainers.

He’s been with us for quite some time now. I tend to think of him as one of our quieter, more ‘let my work speak for itself rather than my voice’ kinda guys!

Please say hello to Jason Mott:

“I have been personal training for the last 7 years and to be honest I love my job.

The satisfaction I get from seeing my clients achieving their goals and more is the best feeling.

I do enjoy pushing my clients through their paces, and with sweat and pain comes results.

Each session offers something different with progress being the leading factor.

I always try to make sure that by the end of the session you have not only learnt but enjoyed the session, as let’s face it, if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t carry on doing it yourself.

I firmly believe that it’s not just the gym that gives results. It’s the health and lifestyle that also needs to be improved. So, I try to combine that with the work we do in the gym.


With Christmas and the party season fast approaching, it’s not too late to start changing for the better.
